This summer my grandmother hosted a fabulous family party that was beautifully planned to the last detail from the stage set up for the musicians in the family, to the delicious food, to a nature walk for the children. One of my favorite elements was her centerpieces – brightly colored tomato cans filled with summer-ey flowers. Here’s the inspiration photo I snapped with my phone since I knew I had to borrow this idea!
I finally got the chance to use this great idea a few weeks ago when hosting a going away dinner for some friends. If you would use canned tomatoes anyway (chili, marinara sauce, tomato soup, or lasagna anyone?) simply choose some in pretty cans with large, brightly colored tomato graphics – you could use other canned veggies or fruits as well. The ones I normally buy from Costco worked perfectly:
And the best part is that assuming you would have bought the tomatoes for cooking anyway, this centerpiece can be completely free! I splurged on a bouquet of fall flowers while picking up the groceries for the party, but I could have filled the cans with fall leaves and grasses from around my house and not spent a penny.
